, virginia, a community is mourning the lo of a mother and her two young children killed in a townhouse fire. neighbors held a candlelight vigil for she and her so, solomon and alfonso. they died of smoke inhalation and burns after their home caught fire on wednesday. the children were 3 and 5 years old. their gndmother said she appreciated the community support. >> i have lived here for three years and haven't even seen this many people. for all of them to come out of their doors and support us not even knowing who we are, i am really, really loving it. i just thank god tt all of them. >> investigators are trying to determine what started the fire. three other children and a man escaped from the burning townhouse>>> a congregation near atlanta is anxiousl awaiting word from their bishop this morning, expected to address allegations that he lured four young men into sexual relationships. this is videoof h 8:00 service an hour ago near atlanta. it does not show the bishop's arrival on stage. lauits by four men claim lang pushed them into sexual relationships using the promise of lavish g

virginia. jay gray has the latest on storm preparations from kill devil hills on the outer banks. >> reporter: calm seas can't hide the concern as hurricane earl, a major storm continues to close in on the east coast. >> from north carolina, to maine, any of these areas could be impacted and getting people to record they need recognize they need to get ready now. >> the current forecast track shows earl brushing the coast in the next couple of days. >> it doesn't have to make landfall to have very significant impact. >> reporter: north carolina's outer banks will likely be the first to feel the effects of earl. >> i think everybody is concerned. the locals are saying it is teasing us. so we're going to hang out and see what happens until they run us off the island, i guess we'll be all right. >> reporter: evacuations orders are already in effect on okracoke island. more are expected later today. as far north as massachusetts, many aren't waiting for orders, already pulling boats from the water and preparing to ride out the storm. >> i'll hunker down in the basement if need be. we

, virginia, and pennsylvania pay tribute to the 2,752 victims killed when terrorists hijacked four commercial planes and attacked the u.s. in lower manhattan, 9/11 families gathered at ducati park adjacent to ground zero. throughout the morning as has now become tradition, the names of victims will be read and four moments of silence will mark the times each plane hit and each tower fell. vice president joe biden is attending the ceremony, along with city and state leaders and first responders. at the pentagon, president obama participates in a wreath laying ceremony. and in shanksville, pennsylvania where united flight 93 crashed, first lady michelle obama along with laura bush attend a ceremony to honor the passengers who fought back. meanwhile, the plans to rebuild at ground zero are moving forward. the centerpiece, one world trade center is expected to be completed by 2013. with each construction step forward, there remains a connection to the past. the national september 11 memorial and museum, slated to be finished in 2012. >> a memorial to inspire people around the world. an

really hard. they are getting wind driven heavy rains from virginia beach down to nags head. those areas of yellow and orange, the center of circulation of earl is just about 40 or 50 miles to the east of hatteras. but the heavy rains are coming in inland and slamming the beach area there. our local radar not showing rain here but there are a few sprinkles in the northern neck of virginia and bay. some of the rain will be arriving into ocean city in the next hour. and earl, here's the wide view continues to advance to the north. it's a category 2 storm. the winds have decreased since yesterday morning at this time but still a powerful storm moving north-northeast at 16. it will take it up towards new england. closer view of the track showing it will be further out to sea. there's still going to be enough tropical storm force winds, maybe 40 to 50-mile-per-hour gusts at ocean city later today. we'll have temperatures climbing in the mid to upper 90s. and breezy tomorrow near 80. looks like a great labor day weekend. how's the traffic? >> we're starting you off with good news. overni

northern virginia and another stabbing in ohio. >>> a tragic accident appears to have taken the life of a 17-month-old boy in silver spring, maryland. police say he died after getting entangledn a drapery call. a historical call from the child's mother brought rescuers to the apartment yesterday morning. the child somehow got oust his crib and got his neck caught in the window cord. officials prformed cpr and rushed him to hospital where he was pronounced dead. there are no signs of foul play. they are looking into this tragedy as an accidental death. >>> police in prince george's county maryland said the shooting death of a hyattsville teenager may have been gang-related. medics found the boy shot in a park on nicholson street and rushed him to the hospital where he died. so far no arrests. >>> police have now released th 911 calls made by people who witnessed the shooting and standoff inside johns hopkins university hospital. >> the shooting -- >> we had a shooting on the floor. >> do you know how many people have been shot? >> one person, a doctor. >> the 911 calls described the fear t

again today, sunday, for hundreds of virginia drivers trying to process their licenses. but at least the dmv is open. 14 virginia dmv offices will be open for business today from 1:00 to 5:00. a computer glitch late last month caused a backlog. 14 offices will also be open tomorrow between 8:00 and noon. you can see the full list at nbcwashington.com. give yourself extra time if you're riding metro's red line. the transit agency closed five stations so crews could work on the tracks. free shuttles can take you between the stations but the service could add an extra 40 minutes to your commute. we continue to follow a developing story out of new zealand this morning. a 7.1 magnitude earthquake ripped a new 11-foot-long fault line into the surface. it is a miracle no one was killed. only two people were injured. buildings have crumbled. the power and water supplies have now been restored. a state of emergency and curfew have been decleared amid concerns of falling debris. >> early indications are there was quite significant damage to private property but obviously it's right across the
